Choosing the right present for someone with diabetes
Are you stuck for ideas of what to give a family member or friend with diabetes? I had a good look around my Safeway store the other day and came up with some ideas I would like to share.
For either a man or woman, I would start with a customized basket. The floral department has beautiful live and artificial flowers and greenery. And don’t forget wrapping interesting ribbon around the handle or decorating the basket with seasonal ornaments like a snowman peeking out of a corner. Baskets are available in all sizes and shapes so be sure to use your imagination. Below are a few theme suggestions:
Baking Basket
- Cookbook for people with diabetes
- Baking utensils (who couldn’t use a new wooden spoon?)
- Oven mitts
- Matching pot holder and tea towel
- Cookie sheet, cake pans
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
Food Basket
- Selection of teas/coffee
- Light hot chocolate
- Tea biscuits (e.g. Dare’s Simple Pleasures)
- Kerr’s 'light' candies
- Dessert - made from a cookbook for people with diabetes
Bath Basket
- Scrubby or a new sponge
- Foot cream (check with the pharmacist for one suitable for someone with diabetes)
- Mild soaps
- Scented candles
Stocking Stuffers
Instead of gifts of chocolates or candy, try some of these.
- CDs/videos
- Gloves
- Painted bird house
- Picture frame
- Disposable camera
- Socks (not tube socks please)
