Editorial Advisory Board
Purpose
Family Health magazine is a twice-yearly publication written for the public. It contains articles, written by physicians and other health care professionals, which will assist readers in managing their continued good health and preventing the onset of ill health.
The purpose of the Editorial Advisory Board is to provide the professional advice and guidance the publisher needs to attain this goal. The Editorial Advisory Board will also ensure that all content is consistent with the accepted medical practice of the Alberta College of Family Physicians.
Composition
Both the Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board and the Medical Editor will be family physicians, the appointment of whom will be mutually agreed upon by the Executive Committee of the Alberta College of Family Physicians and the publisher of Family Health. The Chair will recruit family physicians, and other health care professionals where appropriate, as members to act as departmental advisers and coordinate the various subject areas of the publication. The Medical Editor is responsible for the accuracy and appropriateness of all content. The Executive Editor/Publisher of Family Health magazine and other senior editorial personnel, as appropriate, will also be members.
Duties / Responsibilities
The Board will:
- Plan the annual editorial schedule.
- Arrange for the writing of all articles.
- Review and assess all published issues of Family Health and recommend appropriate changes or improvements.
The Chair will:
- Recruit appropriate department heads and authors and provide leadership to the Editorial Advisory Board, ensuring that all members empathize with the focus, style and general intent of departments for which they are responsible.
- Provide liaison between the Alberta College of Family Physicians and Family Health.
- Review all articles prior to publication.
- Chair all Editorial Advisory Board meetings.
- Advise the Executive Editor/Publisher of Family Health on medical or other matters as appropriate.
The Medical Editor will:
- Be responsible for ensuring that all medical content is consistent with the accepted medical practice of the Alberta College of Family Physicians.
- Provide support to the Board and assist all members and authors in understanding the focus, style and general intent of Family Health’s editorial content.
- Advise the Executive Editor/Publisher of Family Health on medical or other matters as appropriate.
Departmental Advisors will:
- Be responsible for the coordination and development of their departments.
- In consultation with other Board members, select the subjects to appear in their own departments.
- Select colleagues to write the articles and ensure that those authors are aware of the objectives and purpose of the articles.
- Review all department articles to ensure consistency with Board policies.
- Provide other advice and guidance as appropriate.
The Executive Editor will:
- Be the approving authority for all editorial content in areas other than medical practice and opinion.
- Be responsible for all production and copy flow.
- Arrange for copy editing to ensure language and style are consistent with the magazine’s needs. The appropriate
- Departmental Advisor and/or the Medical Editor will review changes to copy.
- Ensure that adequate support systems are in place to minimize the time requirement of Editorial Advisory Board members.
